Fishing Report 4.22.19 - Written by Sean Gamble
The Yampa is up! It’s running around 1000 CFS today, so it’s high and muddy. The tailwaters are the most fishable part of the Yampa, but you can fish the Yampa in town if you’re focusing on slower waters.
Recommended Flies for the Yampa:
RS2s, Brassies, Red Zebras, JuJuBee’s, Merchury Baetis, San Juan Worms, Egg Patterns and Streamers.
The lakes will be opening soon. Once the ice comes off the lakes, the fishing should be pretty good! Steamboat lake will be open in a few weeks and Stagecoach is fishable right now. It’s been great around the inlet and anywhere there is open water. We have mostly been fishing little leeches and small streamers in the lakes.
Once the river opens a little bit more, we will be running float trips. It’s a little stained right now. However, spots are filling up so book your trip now! May and June will be prime for float trips. The river is going to get BIG this summer.
We have some new streamer flies in right now at the shop, as well as some new reels including the new Ross Animas reel.
Come visit us at the shop for more tips on flies and where to fish.
