Yampa River

The Yampa river recently peaked and is now in the comedown. Fishing will improve thanks to the high water conditions and because the fish are eating better. Soon you'll be able to enjoy float fishing and wade fishing due to the drop in flow and increase in water clarity.

Spencer's Best Fly Selection:

  • Stone flies
  • Dirty flies
    • Worms
    • Eggs
  • Hatches
    • Drakes (now starting to show)
    • Pale Morning Dun
  • Streamers
  • Sculpin patterns
  • Flashy streamers
  • Coffees sparkle minow

Elk River

Fishing conditions at Elk River are similar to that of Yampa river. We also recommend the same fly selection if you're fishing at Elk River.

Tail Waters/Sarvis Creek

Fishing is great at Tail Waters/Sarvis Creek. The hatches are strong and the flow is up slightly.

Best Flies to Use:

  • Zebra midges (black and olive)
  • RS2 (black and olive)
  • Barrs Emerger (natural blue wing olives)
  • Dry flies
    • Blue wing olives
  • Midges

Still Waters

Local still waters, such as Steamboat Lake, Stagecoach Reservoir and Pearl Lake have all seen great fishing due to the ice-off conditions and plentiful hatches.

Best Flies to Use:

  • Chironomid
  • Leeches
  • Wooly buggers
  • Crawfish patterns

Avoid the Crowd

To avoid the crowds at Tailwater, head to Yampa river and Pearl lake. You will also find good fishing and fewer crowds at Whispering Willows and many private properties, including Private Pond Selection and many upper properties above town.
