SteamboatSprings, Yampa River Fishing -

Fishing Report for 2.23.21 - Written by Ben Rock

With what could have been our last big winter cold pop behind us, spring fishing is right around the corner. The Yampa River through and above town is a great opportunistic fishery right now. These warmer weeks can yield open stretches and eager fish! With most trout holding in the deepest slowest water, they are not hard to find. Nymphing, Streamers, and even some quality midge dry fly fishing, have all been productive recently. We are in one of the best times of year to sleep in and still enjoy a great afternoon bite. We have some great winter properties available right now.

Ice fishing has really picked up in the last couple of weeks. With a little more snow on the ice and fish moving towards their spring holding areas, there have been some large catches on our local reservoirs.

The slush conditions on Steamboat Lake and Stagecoach Reservoir have drastically improved as temperatures have stayed consistently low, resulting in harder, thicker ice. In addition to this, the overcast skies and snow flurries have resulted in really great fishing conditions.

But with a late ice up this year, ice fishing conditions will likely only last through March. So if you want to get out there, now is the time. Straightline is offering daily fly fishing trips and ice fishing trips for those looking for a break from the mountain.
