Skiing
Only 9 days to go until opening day, November 20, 2021! Today and tomorrow we could be seeing up to 8 inches of snow and at this rate the resort is 162% of average for the 2021/2022 season so far. We can’t wait to get out there!
With ski season right around the corner, we’re all crossing our fingers for an epic 2021/2022 ski season. According to NOAA, the majority of data suggests it’s probable another cold phase known as La Nina is forming. You’ve most likely have heard the terms El Nino and La Nina before, but what does it exactly mean? To put it simply, La Nina is defined as “cooler than normal sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean that impact global weather patterns”.
La Nina usually favors the Pacific Northwest regions, such as British Columbia, Alberta, Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Northwest Colorado. So what does this mean for us? When a La Nina year occurs, Steamboat Resort typically gets hit with additional snowfall and colder weather while Southern Colorado experiences warmer and dryer conditions. According to forecasts, Steamboat can expect a later than usual start to winter in December and a mostly normal snow season.
It all sounds like good news to us, but keep in mind that La Nina and El Nino weather events are difficult to accurately forecast and things often change. That said, we can still expect a great 2021/2022 ski season with the new additions and improvements to Steamboat Resort, such as the new Lower Gondola Terminal, Steamboat Square, resort entrance, and escalator. It’s all a part of Steamboat Resort’s ongoing multi-year, multi-million dollar project to improve the base area and expand mountain terrain.
We are seeing major changes to the resort, but the heart and spirit of Ski Town USA remains the same and year after year Steamboat is rated as one of the Best Ski Towns in North America. In previous years our resort and town has been mentioned by Forbes, USA Today, Outside Magazine, and other notable organizations. For the locals here, Steamboat is a great place to live and for tourists it’s an awesome town visit.
